Best two way radio for long road trip with three cars?

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

So I heard that its best to have a two way radio so that everyone will keep in touch in case cell phones fail.
We will be going from Michigan, to Chicago, to New York.
I need something that is cheap, and can handle car rides so that we wont have problems speaking to one another.
I am already thinking about purchasing the Motorola MJ27OR two way radio from Walmart.

Can you make a UHF handheld work with a basic 2-way family FRS or GMRS radio (type you can buy from walmart)?

      Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

since UHF radios work on 400.000-470.000MHz radio frequencies
      AND
since FRS chanels use FCC public band frequencies:
      List of FRS channels

      ChannelFrequency (MHz)Notes
      1462.5625Shared with GMRS.
      2462.5875Shared with GMRS.
      3462.6125Shared with GMRS.
      4462.6375Shared with GMRS.
      5462.6625Shared with GMRS.
      6462.6875Shared with GMRS.
      7462.7125Shared with GMRS.
      8467.5625FRS use only
      9467.5875FRS use only
      10467.6125FRS use only
      11467.6375FRS use only
      12467.6625FRS use only
      13467.6875FRS use only
      14467.7125FRS use only

Would a UHF radio proframmed on one of the frs channels…say
channel 14@ 467.7125, recieve and transmit signal which your average 2-way 12 mile cobra from walmart can pick up, and then tranmit to the UHF?

I know the frequencies match, but am I missing something?

The UHF I’m talking about has a 2watt output if that matters.

(Output power: UHF 400-470mhz ,2W output PUXING PX-2R 400.000-470.000MHz radio)

I really hope it can be done, because this way, I can have a reliable way to communicate on the family radio channels when one of my 2-ways from walmart fail me during a hike or something.

Our walkie-talkies have 22 channels. Which channels are we supposed to be on? Are some off-limits? ?

          Friday, November 12th, 2010

I have no idea what FRS and GMRS means. They’re just a couple of Uniden walkie-talkies we got at Walmart so we could communicate with another family on a trip. Thanks.

Do long-range GMRS radios really work?

          Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I go hiking-around in the woods alot, and I’m frequently out of cell phone range. In the past I’ve owned FRS radios, and they have low-average range. Now I see advertisements for GMRS radios that say "UP TO 17 Mile range."

Now – I’m no fool. I know that "up to" means that 17 miles is the top-end, not the minimum or even average range. But – I want to know if anyone out there has experience with these radios, what kind of range they get, and how things like trees, etc., impact the range.

If you can recommend a model that you have had success with, or those to avoid, that would be most helpful.

          Example: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5544177

            professional GMRS radio?

            Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

i dont know if it has to be GMRS, but i need a professional mobile radio for staying in contact with someone far away that can be carried in hand.

i dont mean one of those small, cheap plastic radios you get at walmart that claims ‘14 mile range’ because we all know thats only under ideal conditions.

and i need something with a detachable antenna to switch them out. THANKS
            handheld, not mobile.
